30 Day Photo Diary: Day 6- A story about humaneness

This lady called Ama owns a small shop next to the bus station where she sells coconuts together with her husband. She is eighty five years old, energetic as a twenty old girl and always smiling and asking a lot of questions. I once forgot my wallet on her counter; less than a minute later on the way to my rickshaw I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was her bringing the wallet and giving me a scolding look saying “You need to take better care of your belongings” . Needless to say she didn`t speak a word of English.

It was but yesterday I thought of myself a fragment quivering without rhythm in the sphere of life. Now I know that I am the sphere, and all life in rhythmic fragments moves within me.

Happy times in De Hoge Veluwe

Photo May 02, 4 41 25 PM

It is not the usual place where people in their 20ties would choose to go. For somebody who wants to do something cool and fun during a warm weekend in the Netherlands, spending the day in the park somehow does not sound that appealing.

Well, it is. Spending time in nature has numerous benefits such as increased positivity and  improved outlook towards life; it also strengthens your immunity and boosts vitamine D levels (more info on these at http://news.health.com/2014/09/29/health-benefits-of-nature/ ). But what makes it really special for me is that I have shared one of the best days of my life with my friends in that park and spent some true quality time with them.

You can find free bikes at the each of the entrances and the 40 km of cycling paths are just perfect to cover for one day. In between you can take breaks and enjoy the various landscapes (the park can literally transform itself from a savanna lookalike into a deep cozy forest in a span of a few kilometers) and animals (there are a lot of deer walking around). A visit to the beautiful Kroler Muller museum located in the park is also a must, but if you would like to do that, I would recommend starting the day really early, as there are plenty of beautiful art pieces (both indoors and outdoors) to be seen. A perfect way to end the day after a relaxing bike ride is to have a picnic at the lake (you can easily carry the food at the back of your bike). Just make sure you carry enough food and drinks, as the only restaurant is in the center of the park.

30 Day Photo Diary: Day 5- A story about Journeys Back in Time

The boat man waiting for the next passenger. He was taking people across the Peryar river  charging ten Rupees for a one way trip. Whenever his helper was on the boat or there were passengers willing to do the rowing themselves he would chew his “Paan” and silently observe his surroundings. I enjoyed his quiet contemplative presence which was matching so well the calm river and peaceful ambiance. I took one of my best pictures of sunsets and skies from his boat, some of which you will see in the coming days of this photo diary.

It is a very interesting coincidence that this exact river is the setting of my favorite book, “The God of Small Things” which I read eight years ago never imagining that at one point of my life I would see the river every day. You can find more about the book at http://www.amazon.com/The-God-Small-Things-Novel/dp/0812979656 .

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

The.Curious.Incident

I like books that give you a different type of perspective. That move you and make you think. That stay with you long after you read them. “The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time” has been one of my favorite books for such a long time, because it accomplished to achieve all these things and even more.

It narrates what starts as a detective story through the eyes of an autistic child, a story that would be normally being classified as sad and unfortunate, but which in this case is fascinating and impactful. A story that shows that everybody, whatever restrictions they have, can make a difference if I they have a goal and put their heart into it. In a very compelling way, Mark Haddon allows the reader to go beyond the storyline, to dive deeply into the world of autistic children and to develop an understanding how they perceive (or fail to perceive) things around them and how lovable they truly are.

Of course, when a friend of fine who had also read the book suggested to watch the play together in London`s Gielgud Theatre, I was more than exited to do it!

The plot was re-created flawlessly and the actors were absolutely impressive. But what made it just unforgettable were the endless imagination and the inventiveness of the play. The innovative stage, visuals and dynamics, together with swirling sequence of the scenes made resulted in a play which was a true delight for the senses. Highly recommended!

Orange World – A Kingsday Reportage

The Netherlands is a country of orderly ways of living, where rules and procedures are strictly followed. There are however, some exceptional days when all the rules are forgotten when the air smells like party from early morning. When almost all ways of celebrating are absolutely acceptable. One such day is Kingsday.

There is one thing that you can notice very explicitly – orange. Orange costumes, hats, sun glasses, wings, wigs, and all sorts of weird accessories. You might encounter some victims of over partying here and there, but overall the crowd is very friendly and the overall atmosphere is happy, free and joyful. I haven`t seen a holiday to be so celebrated so wholeheartedly and intensely in any other country (even though Norwegians are claiming that their madness on their national day is even bigger, but I haven`t seen it in person 😉 )

It is a lot of fun, so make sure you see it! A few tips from me:

  • The three main ways to experience the day are to walk around the city, get on a boat or party on one of the many stages around city. My advice would be to go on a boat if you want to have a good party, or to stay on the ground and walk around if you are more into taking pictures and exploring the flea markets.
  • Do not trust the weather forecast for that day- the weather somehow turns out a loooot better than predicted.
  • Do not forget that the date is April 27th and not April 30th (the day when Queensday was celebrated) any more 😉

30 Day Photo Diary: Day 4 – A story about Going Home

IMG_1554

I just love the atmosphere of this picture- the beautiful nature, its mystery and most importantly – this amazing old lady. It was very difficult to meet her, as she didn’t go out much, but I had enough time to wait for the right moment. It is very likely that this house has been her home for the most of her life and the village has been her world. The contrast with so many of the people from my generation including myself- living abroad and not sure anymore where exactly our physical home is, is so big. But independently of the type of person we are- a globetrotter or someone who has never left their village, there is a home within ourselves and it takes us just a minute to get there. For me the picture also shows this mysterious place out of this world where we find our safe haven and feel at peace where our true home is.

There are these great ideas that uplift you and make you smile. One of them that I came accross is the website www.lastlemon.com.   What these guys do is illustrate the things that make you happy and post in in their Facebook page. What you need to do is to upload  your happyness list  and keep an eye on their page.  What you`ll get is your own personal illustration which you can simply smile at, share with a friend or print out and make a card from. It`s simple, personal and creative way to express your appreciation to life and things and people that make you happy, and something totally wortwhile checking out!

A Spring Story

  DSC02476

The start of the spring always puts me in a poetic and contemplative mood. I took this picture of branches in bloom two years ago and it has been waiting for a long time for a suitable poem to complement it. Today I found it and together they make the perfect combination- hope you`ll enjoy this beautiful poem by Khalil Gibran – a celebration of sun, warmth, love and peace.

Peace Contagious

One branch in bloom said to his neighboring branch, “This is a dull and empty day.” And the other branch answered, “It`s indeed empty and dull.”

At that moment a sparrow alighted on one of the branches, and the other sparrow nearby.

And one of the sparrows chirped and said, “My mate has left me”. And the other sparrow cried, “My mate has also gone and she will not return. And what care I?”

Then the two birds began to twitter and scold, and soon they started fighting and making harsh noise upon the air.

All of a sudden two other sparrows came sailing from the sky, and they sat queetly beside the restless two. And there was calm, and there was peace.

Then the two pairs flew together in pairs.

And the first branch said to its neighboring branch, “That was a mighty zig-zag of a sound”. And the other branch answered, “Call it what you will, it is now both peaceful and spacious. And if the upper air makes peace it seems to be that those who dwell in the lower might make peace also. Will not wave in the wind a little nearer to me?”

And the first branch said, “Oh, perchance, for peace`s sake, ere the Spring is over.”

And then he waived himself with the strong wind to embrace her.
